The Tunnel represents the psyche, our inner spiriyual world. In this Epic Poem Derek Fanning takes us into his own psyche and there we witness a world which is often very beautiful indeed. In the Tunnel there are meetings with 17th Century Poets, meetings with contended lovers, meetings with people in despair, meetings with shallow people.
The Tunnel is a mirror of our own society with all its failings, with its lack of spirituality, its lack of imagination. The poem is a criticism of our world but it also points to faith, to hope, to love.
