Description

Níl aon amhras ach gurbh é Máirtín Ó Cadhain mórscríbhneoir Gaeilge na linne seo. Mar scríbhneoir, mar mhúinteoir agus mar agóidí d’fhág sé a mharc go soiléir agus go dána ar an saol. Tiomsaithe faoi chlúdaigh an leabhair seo tá cúig cinn déag de na gearrscéalta is fearr uaidh.

Ó scéalta tuaithe Chonamara mar atá léirithe in ‘An Braon Broghach’ agus ‘Cois Caoláire’ go scéalta cathrach ‘An tSraith ar Lár’ agus ‘An tSraith dhá Tógáil’, éiríonn leis an gCadhnach an daonnacht choiteann is dlúth agus d’inneach dá charachtair uile a chur i leith go teann, fórsúil, liriciúil, ealaíonta.

Agus má tá dua féin ag baint le cuid de na scéalta seo a léamh, téann siad chun tairbhe do dhuine ar bith a thabharfaidh fúthu. Mar a dúradh san úrscéal is cáiliúla dá chuid, Cré na Cille: ‘Éistear le mo ghlór! Caithfear éisteacht . . .’ Is fiú éisteacht leis go fóill.

Máirtín Ó Cadhain is one of Ireland’s foremost and respected writers in modern Irish and English. ‘Cré na Cille’, his well-known novel is often compared to Joyce’s ‘Ulysses’ and is its equivalent in many respects. Ó Cadhain is sometimes regarded as difficult dialectically, however this selection of short stories by eminent poet Louis de Paor, offers the reader, of average reading skills, an enjoyable read from one of the Irish language literature’s best exponents.
