While Irish poets of old sang the praises of the oak, the elm or the speckled salmon, the Brahons, or lawyer-arbitrators were scribing their ancient Irish laws. Although eminently practical they often appear whimsical, perhaps giving rise to a purported Irish characteristic? The laws are appealing as much for their fair-mindedness as for their offbeat humour and their native charm. They are a testament, not only to an ancient way of life, but to the Irish love of justice.
