Description

Lough Neagh covers an area of one hundred and forty nine square miles and is the largest lake in Britain and Ireland and the fifth largest in Europe. It is approximately nineteen miles long and ten miles wide. This book deals with the place-names of the area, and takes the form of a journey round the lough, beginning and ending at the historic town of Antrim at the north-eastern corner. In the course of this journey a wide range of place-names is encountered, ranging from names of rocks and islands, to names of townlands, towns, villages, rivers, parishes and native Irish territories, some of which have fallen out of use but all of which provide a fascinating insight into the character of the region and its history.
