Ordance Survey Letters Donegal 1935 Michael Herity MRIA Eag
An edited collection of the 19th
century letters which were to form the basis of the modern
English ordinance survey placenames for the county of Donegal.
With preface by Brian Friel and an introduction from the
editor.
These letters are reports writen
by a group of talented Irish scolars led by John O’Donovan
in the field and George Petrie from his house at 21 Great
Charles St, Dublin.
Beginning in County Down in March
1834 O’Donovan wrote informal accounts of the places he
visited, the discoveries he made and the characters he
met, having decided the orthography of the naems to be
engraved on the six inch maps of the Survey.
These valuable documents written
before the Great Famine while the link with medieval and
ancient Ireland was still alive, exist for 29 of the 32
counties of Ireland, the exceptions being Antrim, Tyrone
and Cork. Kerry was the last county to be surveyed in 1841.
